1. Pre-Production: This is where you focus on improving the melody, lyrics, rhythm, and arrangement, giving your vocals the tight flow they need to fit in the song.
2. Pre-Recording: This is where you focus on the room, the vibe, the signal flow, and the singer's health. Discomfort during this phase will kill your session.
3. Recording: This is where you focus on the headphone mix, the mic technique, and the overall performance for every single vocal part (leads and harmonies).
4. Editing: Where you...hey, where'd you go? Come back here. You can't make pro vocals unless you spend time editing them. This means tweaking them for tightness and tuning, eliminating background noise, and comping together a perfect master vocal take.
5. Mixing: This is where you bring the vocal together with the rest of the tracks. You use EQ, compression, and effects to make your lush vocal sound leap out of your speakers without sounding stuck on top of the rest of the mix.

But I wasn't always qualified to teach.

My first vocal productions were terrible!

I would muddy up the midrange just by waking up in the morning!

I would set up a vocal session without a clue about what I needed. I used the worst budget microphones. I had no idea where to position the mic. I think I even tried to record using my computer sound card one time!

I'd put the singer in the corner of my bedroom and use my closet door as a divider. Of course, I had no idea this would add more reflections and room sound to my vocal track. I would've had better luck recording the vocals anywhere else!

After trudging through to get a good take, I was surprised by how thin and harsh my vocals sounded. I was even more baffled that I couldn't fit them into the mix. I'd try to get a clean and open mix where every instrument supported the vocals, but they always sounded either too close or too far away.

No matter how much EQ'ing I did, I couldn't create separation between my vocals and the instruments. I didn't understand how to use compression to keep my vocals balanced and present. And I struggled to use reverb, delay, and other effects to thicken up the vocals so that they would sit properly with the rest of the instruments.
